History of Smiths Opticians

Smiths Opticians est. 1985

Our History

There has been an opticians serving Monton and the surrounding area circa 1930s. When Mr Dennis Igoe opened his first practice here in 1968 it was just him and the multi-talented receptionist/assistant Chris Pasco (who still works at our practice to this day)!

Shortly after, in 1973, he was joined by optician Mrs Margaret Smith. When Margaret left to start a family she was replaced by her husband Mr David Smith. Having returned to optometry Margaret joined her David in buying the practice from Mr Igoe in 1985.

Mr Igoe would continue to practice in Middleton while the Smiths forged ahead with a full refurbishment of the business in 1987. This also included the introduction of their first computer system.

By the early 90s they were leading the way by introducing retinal cameras to their test rooms allowing examination of patient’s optic nerve heads and retina.

The practice continued successfully under the husband and wife team until it changed hands in 2019 and was purchased by Mr Kishor Patel.

Having overseen another full practice open plan refurbishment and introduced the latest technology such as OCT and DNEye Scanner Mr Patel remains committed to offering professional leading edge eyecare to Monton and the surrounding community.
